The invention concerns the field of technical ceramics and relates to transparent spinel ceramics, which can be used, for example, as protective ceramics, and to methods for the production thereof. The problem addressed by the invention is to specify transparent spinel ceramics that contain no visible defects, to the extent possible, and that have an in-line transmittance of more than 82% in wavelength ranges of infrared light, measured between 1000 and 2500 nm, for specimen thicknesses of > 3 mm. This problem is solved by means of spinel ceramics that are transparent in wavelength ranges of infrared light, composed of sintered magnesium aluminum spinel having an average microstructure grain size of < 10 µm and having in total at most 0.5 mass percent of homogeneously distributed additives of calcium and/or strontium and/or barium, which are present at a concentration, in each case expressed as an oxide, of 0.005 to < 0.2 mass percent CaO and/or 0.005 to < 0.5 mass percent SrO and/or 0.005 to < 0.5 mass percent BaO.Centro de Documentación
