Some thermoresistant pigments having spinel and tin sphene structure were synthesized using as chromophore (Cr3+) source leather wastes with 6.5% Cr2O3 content. This particular chromium source brings a series of advantages, as: burning of the organic components supplies in situ a part of the necessary energy of the synthesis and the chromophore is well dispersed in the reaction mixture. The complete burning of the wastes without the emission of polluting compounds requires the reaction mixture to be introduced in the oven at temperatures above 800 C.
